STOM, Matthias. The Incredulity of St Thomas.
1620. Oil on canvas.
Museo del Prado, Madrid. |
Today consider the
patientes Dei. In Stom's depiction of Thomas' unbelief, it is not Thomas but Christ on whom we fix our eyes. Note the patience and forbearance with Thomas' doubt: Christ holds his hands as if to prevent the other disciples from interrupting Thomas' inspection of his body. Stom's focus on the wound in the side is also telling, for as John tells us, it was the "blood and water" of the Church that came from forth at the
latus Christi.
